Hola gente...
tengo el problema de que no puedo instalar mi gforce 6600 256mb en mi kubuntu (64bits) ya me lei varias guias y probre varios metodos pero cada vez que lo hago se instalan bien pero cuando reinicio no carga mas el kubuntu, se tilda despues de cargar todos los controladores se queda la pantalla con la barra de estado pero nunca avanza. Y para colmo como me estoy recien iniciando en linux cada vez que tengo ese quilombo tenque que volver a instalar todo de cero. La verdad que necesito instalar la placa porque si no anda todo medio lenteja a no tener drivers todo lo relacionado a video aparte que tengo la resolucion en 1024x768. Y sobre todo porque me rompe mucho no tenerla instalada yo quiero tenerla instalada sea como sea asi que alguien que me ayude porque ya estoy podrido de rebentar al pinguino- jajaja

Ademas, tu Linux esta corriendo en 64 bits? (que el microprocesador soporte 64 bits no quiere decir que esta funcionando a 64 bits).

SI los probe pero cuando ejecuto el run me dice que esta el x cerber activado o algo por el estilo no lo recuerdo bien en este momento, busque como desactivarla y encontre que decia que tengia que cambiar el nivel y lo cambie a 5. Pero cuando reinicie me seguia deciendo lo mismo. Que el x server esta activado-
Cuando este en la terminal grafica apreta control + alt + backspace eso tira abajo el x server, ahi te deberia de quedar una terminal de texto, proba desde ahi.
Sino, cuando cambies el runlevel a 5, debes reiniciar la maquina asi efectivamente entras en ese runlevel.

Ok, lo voy a probar hoy a la noche, una cosa mas. En el driver oficial hay una utilidad para el x file que por lo que entendi te lo configura automanticamente. Ahora como se ejecuta esa utilidad porque la baje pero tiene un monton de archivos y no se como se usa. ALguna idea?

If you need to reconfigure your X server later, you can run nvidia-xconfig again from a terminal. nvidia-xconfig will make a backup copy of your configuration file before modifying it.
dice que cuadno instala te pregunta si queres correr esa herramienta, asi que debes responder si a esa pregunta y corre sola, luego si la queres correr vos debes ir al directorio donde esta y poner ./nvidia-xconfig para que corra.

Hola primero que nada que tipo de Kubuntu estas usando?? 6.06, 6.10 dinos para que sepamos como ayudarte y no te quedes con una mala experiencia de GNU/Linux.
Por otra parte si tienes Ubuntu 6.10 te dejo el repositorio para esta distro:
deb http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/ edgy main-edgy main-edgy-amd64
debes de agragarlo en:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Use ese comando para dar de baja al x server, pero no funciono solo me manda al loggin del linux nada mas.
Ayer probe varias formas pero se sigue tildando. Se instala barbaro sin error alguno pero despues se tilda, deci que me apiole y hice un backup del conf y cuando se caga lo reemplazo y listo, esta todo funcionando nuevamente, pero no se porque no fuinciona el driver- ahora el ofcial no lo puedo instalar porque dice que tengo la x en ejecucion, cambie el nivel todo pero siempre dice el mismo cartel. Ayer me dieron unos comando para "matar a la x" a lo bruto pero tampoco funciono

Installing the nVidia Beta Driver
You can install the driver using one of these two methods. I'm using the first one, but you can choose the one you want.
Method One
Installing from repository
These repositories contain Ubuntu's linux-restricted-modules package, modified slightly to include the 9629 nVidia driver. The advantage to this method is that if you use linux-restricted-modules for anything else (e.g. wireless drivers), you can keep it working with a minimum of hassle.
First, choose your repository. There are two possibilities:-
deb http://amaranth.selfip.com edgy lrm
deb http://ubuntu.lupine.me.uk/ edgy lrm-amd64
The first repository contains packages for the i386/x86_32 architecture (-386 and -generic kernels). The second contains packages for the amd64/x86_64 architecture (-generic kernel only). If you use the second repository you can use gpg authentication:
wget http://ubuntu.lupine.me.uk/root@lupine.me.uk.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
Install the beta driver with:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r) nvidia-glx
If this doesn't work, then it is possible that the Ubuntu developers have released a later version of linux-restricted-modules, and the repository hasn't been updated yet (this is the situation on the 5th November, and happens semi-periodically). You can overcome this by specifying the version of l-r-m that you want to install... first, find the latest version available in the repository:-

As you can see, the latest version containing the nVidia beta drivers in this situation is "2.6.17.5-12~amaranth". So in this situation, you would run:-
sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r)=2.6.17.5-12~amaranth
Note that updating your system will result in the package being overwritten by the newer version :( but these situations should be temporary, as we do try to keep up with the Ubuntu developers.
Configure X.Org to use the new nVidia driver
Note: this step is only required if you did not have the proprietary nVidia drivers installed previously.
Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change the driver to nvidia:
Section "Device"
Identifier ...
Driver "nvidia"
BusID ...
EndSection
And restart X server with Ctrl + Alt + BackSpace.
Note: If X fails to restart, then it is likely that the old version of the nvidia kernel module is still loaded. This can be fixed by running:-
sudo rmmod nvidia && sudo modprobe nvidia
Alternatively, just reboot.
Method Two
Installing from official nVIDIA package
Download the beta driver from nVIDIA beta driver (Linux 32 & 64 bits)
Install required packages to build drivers:
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r) build-essential
Install beta driver. Open a real terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and, after login in, type:
sudo /etc/init.d/?dm stop
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9742-pkg1.run
Note:
If you downloaded the x86_64 installer, then "sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-9742-pkg1.run"
Note:
At the end of the install process, installer will ask you to run the configuration script. Say "yes".
Restart your display manager
sudo /etc/init.d/?dm restart
Note: If X fails to restart, then it is likely that the old version of the nvidia kernel module is still loaded. This can be fixed by running:-
sudo rmmod nvidia && sudo modprobe nvidia
Note:
To add the sched hack, look here for the info and the howto.
Note:
Remember that each time that kernel is updated, you must re-install the driver if you selected this way.
You can check that direct rendering is enabled by running:
glxinfo | grep direct
in a terminal. If it shows
direct rendering: Yes
then all went fine. If you get any other output, try running nVIDIA's configuration tool and restart gdm:
sudo nvidia-xconfig
Adding Beryl repository
Edit /etc/apt/sources.list and add this line:
deb http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/ edgy main-edgy
Note:
The domain name ubuntu.beryl-project.org forwards to a variety of different mirrors. Using it helps to spread the load out between volunteers.
Note:
If you use amd64, add ' main-edgy-amd64' to the end of the line (so it reads 'main-edgy main-edgy-amd64')
Synaptic needs the public key for the new repository. Run this command:
wget http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/quinn.key.asc -O - | sudo apt-key add -
Updating System
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Installing
sudo apt-get install beryl emerald emerald-themes
Post-install configuration
Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add the Option line in the Screen (or Device) section:

Add this to /etc/X11/xorg.conf :
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"

Note:
I own a nVIDIA 7600GS 512DDR2 and it works without the "Extensions" section. To know if you need one of these options, look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and search for
(WW) NVIDIA(0): 32-bit ARGB GLX visuals require the Composite extension.
(II) NVIDIA(0): Disabling 32-bit ARGB GLX visuals.
You can skip the "Extensions" section if these strings are not present.
As of Edgy, the Composite extension is enabled by default, so this bit isn't really needed. Can't hurt though.
Add this to /etc/X11/xorg.conf (optional) :
Section "Device"

Option "TripleBuffer" "true"
EndSection
This option makes beryl smoother, at the expense of eating more video RAM. It may improve performance on some cards.
Configuring Beryl
GNOME
We need to add a startup script to our session startup. The easiest way to do this is to click on the "System" menu in the GNOME panel at the top of your screen. Select "Preferences" then at the bottom select "Sessions". Click on the "Startup Programs" tab and click the "Add" button. Type the following:
beryl-manager
And click on "OK".
Restart and enjoy Right click on the tray icon (a red beryl gem) and you'll see the configuration programs.
KDE
On startup, KDE executes all files in ~/.kde/Autostart - so to get beryl-manager to load on startup, simply create a symlink there, like so:-
ln -s /usr/bin/beryl-manager ~/.kde/Autostart/beryl-manager
